“I know how it looks.”
“It looks like you’ve been helping our daughter lie to me for five days!”
Emily suddenly raised her head.
“I asked him to!”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
“He’s not the one who came up with it. I asked him to pick me up.”
I stared at her.
“Emily, that doesn’t make this better.”
“I know!”
Her voice cracked on the last word.
For the first time since I had arrived, I noticed how pale she looked. Her eyes were swollen, and there were dark shadows beneath them.
She looked exhausted.
Not like a teenager who had spent a week enjoying secret adventures.
Like a child who hadn’t slept properly in days.
My anger faltered, but I wasn’t ready to let go of it.
“Then tell me what’s going on.”
Emily looked at her father.
Mark placed his coffee on the truck’s hood.
