Every morning, I checked my inbox before getting out of bed. Every evening, Lily and I ate across from each other, both pretending not to notice how little we had left to say.

One afternoon, a black SUV stopped outside our house.

I watched through the window as Angela stepped out, followed by a tall man in sunglasses. When he removed them, I forgot how to breathe.

Max looked even more like Lily in person.

I wondered whether I had been wrong.

They had the same green eyes, the same crooked smile, even the same slight tilt of the head when studying something unfamiliar. For one disorienting moment, I wondered whether I had been wrong about everything.

Angela approached first. “I’m sorry we couldn’t warn you. We needed to keep this private.”

Max explained that he was traveling to a neighboring city, where he was scheduled to appear at its annual celebrity-lookalike contest. Angela had shown him my email, and he had agreed to make a brief detour.
