My dad angrily pushed me off the cruise ship into the ocean when he found

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple, I mustered every ounce of strength to keep myself afloat. My arms and legs moved instinctively, memories of swimming lessons with Grandpa guiding my strokes. I had always loved the water, finding solace in its embrace when life at home felt impossible. Now, those lessons were my lifeline.

I remembered Grandpa teaching me to stay calm and breathe, even in the worst situations. “The ocean is like life, Marissa,” he would say with a twinkle in his eyes. “Sometimes, it’ll be calm and gentle, and other times, it’ll try to pull you under. Just remember, you’re stronger than the waves.” His voice echoed in my mind, a beacon of hope in an otherwise bleak moment.

Hours passed, and the stars began to twinkle above me. Exhaustion tugged at my limbs, but determination drove me forward. Eventually, I spotted a faint, bobbing light in the distance. Mustering my remaining energy, I swam toward it, each stroke filled with the will to survive.

As I drew closer, relief washed over me. A small fishing boat, its outline a welcoming silhouette against the starlit sky. “Hey! Over here!” I shouted, my voice hoarse but carrying across the water. The boat’s engine sputtered to life, and it turned toward me, the sound like music to my ears.

“Good heavens, what are you doing out here?” a grizzled fisherman called out as his boat pulled alongside me. With his help, I clambered aboard, shivering uncontrollably.

“Some… family issues,” I managed, wrapping a blanket around myself as I sat down. Despite being drenched and exhausted, I felt a flicker of hope ignite within me. I had survived, and now, it was time to fight back.

The fisherman introduced himself as Sam. His eyes were kind, his voice steady, offering warmth that seeped through the chill in my bones. “You’re a lucky one,” he said, steering the boat toward the shore. “Not many survive a night out here. Let’s get you somewhere safe.”
