“They?”

I pointed toward the takeout receipts.
He sighed.
“Friday.”
“Exactly.”
By Thursday, the apartment looked like ours again.
Mostly.
But I didn’t throw away the evidence.
I put the photographs into a folder on my laptop.
I kept the cleaner’s invoice.
The receipt for the ant treatment.
The estimate to repair the coffee machine, which was almost enough to make replacing it more sensible.

Then I made one sheet of paper.
At the top, I typed, “WHAT A FREE STAY COST”
Underneath were three amounts.
Cleaning.
Pest treatment.
Coffee machine.
I left the total at the bottom.

Dan read it Thursday night.
“This is your plan?”
“Part of it.”
“What part am I missing?”
“I want to hear what he says before he knows we know.”
“Know what?”
“That somebody else was here.”
Dan looked at the receipts again.
“You think he had a party.”
