“I’m sorry I kept you outside the truth.”

I looked toward the recovery wing.
“We will handle that later.”
A nurse appeared.
“She is asking for both of you.”
Noah inhaled sharply.
I took his hand.

Inside the room, Gracie lay against white pillows.
Her face was pale.
Her curls were damp against her forehead.

“I did it.”

“He told you?”

“Are you mad?”
“Yes.”

She immediately looked relieved.
“I told him if I didn’t wake up, he had to explain everything.”

“I know.”
She looked at Noah.
“So technically, he didn’t need to tell you.”
Noah gave a stunned laugh.
I leaned over and carefully embraced my sister.

“I thought you would fight Mom and Dad.”
“I will.”
Gracie sighed.
“That’s exactly why.”
Three Weeks Later
Three weeks later, our parents stepped down as trustees of Gracie’s family trust.
An independent attorney reviewed the marriage agreement and confirmed that much of it would not withstand serious legal scrutiny.

Our aunt Helen temporarily assumed oversight while Gracie and Noah worked with new attorneys to create a structure that gave Gracie far more direct control over her own assets.
News traveled through the family faster than our parents expected.
Invitations stopped arriving.
Their explanations stopped being accepted.
For the first time, relatives looked at them not as the flawless, respectable couple they presented to the world, but as people whose assumptions about their own daughter could no longer be concealed.
