Maddie grinned. “Like an old man.”
“What about her?”
For the first time in 16 years, I looked straight into my daughter’s face and knew she was lying to me.
I smiled anyway.
“Go shower.”
She disappeared upstairs.
Carol called again later that night. Frances had insisted the girls had just been hanging out, but Carol wasn’t convinced.
She was lying to me.
Neither was I.
Whatever our daughters were hiding, we needed to find out.
***
The following Friday evening, I did something I never imagined doing.
I followed my daughter.
Maddie left at seven carrying the same bag.
I waited 30 seconds.
I followed my daughter.
Then got into my car.
Carol was in her car behind mine.
At first, Maddie walked exactly where she always had.
Toward Frances’s street.
Then she reached the corner.
And kept going.
She passed Frances’s block without even looking toward the house.
Carol was in her car behind mine.
