My 13-Year-Old Daughter Spent Three Weeks at Her Dream Summer Camp – When I Picked Her Up, the Director Said, ‘She Isn’t Welcome Back’

But Denise stopped near the dock and said, “The first week, Mia barely got in.”

I turned. “What?”

“Open swim on day nine,” Denise revealed. “The girls came down here after lunch. No lessons. No activity requirement. Just ninety minutes to swim.”

Mia stared across the lake.

“The first week, Mia barely got in.”

Denise pointed toward the end of the dock.

“Everyone ran in. Mia stayed right there.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

Mia said nothing.

Denise continued. “Her counselor asked whether she felt sick.”

“I didn’t,” Mia said.

“She asked whether Mia was scared of the water.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Everyone ran in. Mia stayed right there.”

“So she asked why she wasn’t swimming.”

Mia’s cheeks had gone pink.

“Mia?” I blurted.

She kicked a pebble.

“I asked what we had to do first, Mom.”

I frowned. “First?”

“Like chores.”

Denise nodded. “Her counselor told her there was nothing to do.”
