“That wasn’t true,” Victoria said. “She loved them. But she was planning another life, one where she didn’t have to pretend her marriage was fine.”
“So you decided to terrify three children?”
Her eyes filled.
“I convinced myself I was doing something brave. I was wrong.”
“Yes,” I said. “You were.”
Before we separated, she handed me the folder.
“Please keep these safe. You don’t have to defend me. Just don’t let the children believe the story Marcus is telling them.”
When I confronted Marcus again, he didn’t deny the affair.
He did, however, insist that Emily might have stayed.
“People separate and get back together,” he said. “We could have fixed things.”
“You might have,” I replied. “But you don’t know.”
He paced across my kitchen.
“Everyone acts like I killed our marriage. I made a terrible mistake. I was trying to repair it.”
“Did you stop seeing Andrea?”
