My eyes filled with tears.
“Yes, I remember.”
Grandpa continued.
“You were seven when you brought me your little piggy bank and said, ‘Grandpa, take my money. Don’t be sad. We’ll have our house again someday.’”
I laughed through my tears.
But Grandpa was already crying.
“That day, I promised you that one day I would get that house back. But the years passed, and I could never afford it.”
Then he said something that took my breath away.
“Emily, I bought our house back.”
I went completely still.
“What?”
“Three months ago, I found out it was for sale again. I withdrew the money I’d been saving for years, sold my old piece of land, and bought it.”
I stared at the key in my hand, unable to believe what I was hearing.
“But why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because the house was in terrible condition. I wanted to fix everything exactly the way your grandmother loved it. I went there almost every day, worked with the builders, and sometimes even painted the walls myself.”
