I Was 62 When I Finally Learned That I Mattered Too

I wasn’t just the person who carried the bags, prepared the meals, and made everyone’s life easier.

I was Mireille.

A woman with dreams, feelings, memories, and a life of her own.

And I was still here.

Learning to Live for Myself

When we returned home, I placed my new scarf on a chair and draped my blue sweater over the back of the sofa.

I didn’t hide it in a drawer.

I didn’t treat it like a precious object that needed to be protected.

I simply left it there, where I could see it.

It was no longer a symbol of a missed opportunity.

It had become a reminder of the moment I stopped making myself invisible.

The following weeks weren’t perfect.

Claire sometimes forgot to ask whether I was available. I sometimes agreed to things before checking how I felt. We still misunderstood each other occasionally.

But we learned to start again.
