Because I had spent much of my life caring for my husband, my daughter, and eventually my grandson.

Because after Bernard died, I was afraid of becoming unnecessary.

And because sometimes, when we spend years giving love, we begin to believe that we must earn the right to receive it.

“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t need me as much anymore,” I whispered.

Claire covered her mouth with one hand.

“Mom…”

“After your father died, I tried to stay strong. For you. For everyone. I told myself that if I kept helping, organizing, and being available, I would always have a place in your life. I didn’t understand that I could belong in your life without having to do everything to keep my place.”

Tears filled Claire’s eyes.

“You never had to do all of that for me to love you.”

I gave her a sad smile.

“I know that now. But I didn’t always know it.”
