I traveled to the harbor with our three-month-old twin daughters, hoping to surprise my husband after his long assignment at sea.

“Shannon?” he said.

“What are you doing here?”

I swallowed hard and fought to keep my voice steady.

“I wanted to surprise you,” I whispered.

“I brought our daughters so you could finally meet them.”

The woman glanced at the babies and let out an awkward laugh.

“Well,” she said, “this is certainly an uncomfortable surprise.”

I turned toward my husband, waiting for an explanation.

Dillon sighed with impatience, the way you sigh at a waiter who has brought the wrong order.

“Shannon, please don’t cause a scene.”

“We met during the cruise, and one thing led to another.”

I stared at him.

“Come on, sweetheart,” he said.

“I’m a young, good-looking man.”

“You can’t seriously expect me to spend months at sea without female attention.”

The woman gave a smug little smile.

“Besides,” Dillon added, “it’s simply how men are.”

“You should understand that.”

I could barely believe what I was hearing.
