I traveled to the harbor with our three-month-old twin daughters, hoping to surprise my husband after his long assignment at sea.

“Captain,” she said.

“Shall I read it to him?”

“Please,” said my mother.

“Read him what he read aloud himself.”

PART 4

Ms. Thackeray opened her folder.

The paper inside was cream-colored and slightly soft at the corners, the way a document gets after four years in a drawer.

I knew it before she read a word.

I could smell my mother’s kitchen again: burnt coffee, lemon cleaner, rain on the window.

I could hear a pen scratching.

“Marriage Continuation Agreement,” she read.

“Executed October fourteenth, 2021, at the residence of Rosanne Cavanaugh, before a notary public and two witnesses.”

Dillon’s mouth opened.

“That was my mother-in-law being dramatic.”

“It was a document you signed,” said Ms. Thackeray.

“You also initialed all eleven pages.”

She turned the folder so he could see his own handwriting.

“Item one,” she read.

“I, Dillon Tennant, acknowledge that I betrayed my wife, Shannon Tennant, in the year 2021.”
