I had stopped cooking proper meals.
I had ignored friends.

I had sat in her chair and waited for sleep.
Buying the car had begun as an act of anger.
Yet somewhere between signing the papers and choosing the first destination, something changed.
I remembered that Margaret had not spent 58 years loving me so I could spend my final years waiting to die.
Graham looked at the bracelet again.
“What happens now?”
“I have changed my will.”
All three of them went still.
I raised one hand.
“You will each receive something. But not what you expected.”
Julian opened his mouth, then closed it.
“Most of what remains will go to organizations your mother supported,” I continued. “A scholarship fund. A hospice. A shelter for women rebuilding their lives.”
Phoebe nodded through fresh tears.
“She would like that.”
“Yes, she would.”
I looked at each of them.
“You will not be punished for the rest of your lives. But I will not reward you for treating me like a bank account.”
Graham leaned forward.
“What do you want from us?”
It was a simple question.
It was also the first time any of them had asked.
“I want honesty,” I said. “I want you to visit because I am your father, not because you are measuring the curtains. I want you to remember that your mother was a person before she became an inheritance.”
Phoebe reached for my hand.
I almost pulled away.
Then I let her take it.
“I am sorry, Dad,” she whispered. “Not because of the will. I am sorry because you were alone, and I made it worse.”
Graham looked at me.
“So am I.”
Julian took longer.
Finally, he stepped away from the window.
“I don’t know how to fix this.”
“You begin by not pretending it never happened.”
He nodded.
The car arrived the following Thursday.
It was deep green, with cream leather seats and polished wood inside.
When I saw it, I laughed for the first time since Margaret died.
