All he wanted was to feel that he still mattered.
Unfortunately, Dennis had gradually become so accustomed to helping that his family began treating his generosity as an entitlement rather than a gift.
And he wouldn’t fully understand that until Christmas.
The Christmas Invitation That Never Came
One afternoon, Dennis visited Michael and Isabella’s beautiful home.
The living room was decorated for the holidays. The Christmas tree sparkled beneath the lights, and the smell of vanilla candles filled the air.
Sitting on their expensive leather couch, Dennis began imagining what Christmas might look like that year.
He pictured himself preparing the turkey, using the sage stuffing Maria had always loved. He imagined sharing stories with Michael and perhaps, someday, enjoying the holiday with grandchildren.
It was a simple dream.
Then Dennis suggested that he cook Christmas dinner.
Michael immediately became uncomfortable.
After a moment, he explained that Isabella’s parents would be visiting. They had their own traditions, and it would be easier if Dennis celebrated elsewhere.
