Michael may yet learn to appreciate his father for more than the money he provides. Their relationship may grow stronger as they learn to communicate honestly and respect one another’s boundaries.
But that change cannot be purchased.
Dennis has finally understood that he can offer his son love, guidance, and companionship without financing every decision he makes.
And perhaps the most important lesson of all is this:
You can love your children with your whole heart without giving them your entire life.
Sometimes, the most loving thing a parent can do is stop rescuing an adult child from every consequence and give both of them the opportunity to build a healthier relationship.
Because a place at the Christmas table should never have to be paid for with five years of mortgage payments.
And no parent should have to earn the right to be treated with dignity by continually giving away everything they have.
