And a woman who stood up.
And walked out.
And went somewhere she wanted to be.
This morning, I was on the porch at seven.
Earl Grey. Honey. A splash of milk.
Harold’s blue mug.
At seven-thirty, a white Tesla pulled up.
Daniel got out.
And Chloe. And Caleb. And Renee.
All four of them.
They walked up the front walk. Between the roses.
Caleb ran to the orange grove. Looking for lizards.
Chloe sat down next to me on the swing. With a book.
Renee sat on the porch steps. With her head against the column. Her eyes closed. In the sun.
Daniel sat next to her.
Nobody said anything.
Nobody needed anything.
Nobody was in a hurry to be anywhere else.
I went inside.
To my yellow kitchen.
I made four more cups.
When I came back out, Daniel looked up.
He took his mug.
He looked at it.
