“Especially if it makes me miss soccer.”
Toby considered that.
“I do travel because my job helps our family.”
Then Julian asked, “What would make trips stink less?”
That got a tiny smile.
“One phone call where nobody asks about homework.”
“Unreasonable!”
“Also send me a picture of your hotel chair, Dad.”
Julian laughed. “Anything else?”
Toby hesitated.
“Can I pick one of your shirts before you leave next time?”
“What would make trips stink less?”
Julian softened up. “Yeah, buddy.”
I touched Toby’s shoulder.
“And next time I leave for 20 minutes, you don’t have to send me proof you’re okay,” I said.
“What if you’re worried?”
“Then I can be worried for 20 minutes.”
“What if you’re worried?”
