I opened the wrong door on the fiftieth floor and saw what the most powerful woman in the company had been hiding — the next morning she put eighty-five thousand dollars on the desk.

What I took was two things.

One. She paid for a respiratory consultant for Etta. One consultation and the follow-up. Eleven hundred dollars.

I have paid her back at eighty dollars a month since February and there are two payments left and she has never once mentioned it and the standing order goes to a charity account she nominated, which I think was her way of letting me do it without it being about her.

That consultant changed Etta’s preventer in January and she has not had an admission since.

Two. In March I got a job.

Not a gift. Desh Patnaik put me forward, I applied, I did two interviews, and I did not get told about it by Margo Thale and she has confirmed to me she was not consulted.

Facilities Systems Coordinator. Rotas, stock, contractor access, pass administration.

Pass administration.

I now run the system that issued C-4118, and the first thing I did in that job, in week two, was rewrite the contractor pass procedure so that no directorate can issue one without facilities countersigning it.
