It was raining again.
Of course it was.
She stood beside my car, holding a black umbrella.
I laughed when I saw her.
“Really? The same umbrella?”
“It’s a perfectly good umbrella.”
“It’s practically a character in our relationship.”
She smiled.
“You’re the one who keeps bringing up the past.”
I opened the passenger door for her.
“Your chariot.”
She climbed in.
I started the engine, and we drove up the familiar road.
The city glittered beneath us, its streets shining with rain.
I parked near the railing.
For a while, we stood side by side, looking at the lights.
Then Karen slipped her hand into mine.
“Do you remember what I asked you that night?”
“Which question? You asked me approximately a thousand.”
She laughed.
“I asked you to take me somewhere quiet.”“I remember.”
“I wanted one hour where nobody needed anything from me.”
I turned toward her.
