I shook my head.
“That must be difficult to hear.”
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“You have no idea.”
He stared at his hands.
“I went to Mom’s bookstore yesterday.”
I waited.
“It’s actually really good.”
I smiled.
“Don’t sound so surprised.”
“I’m not surprised. I’m impressed.”
He paused.
“She remembers every customer’s name. She helped a little girl find a book about animals, and the kid hugged her before leaving. Mom looked happier than I’ve seen her in years.”I said nothing.
Daniel looked at me.
“Have you been there?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“You asked me to stay away.”
He nodded slowly.
“I did.”
Silence settled between us.
Then he said, “My therapist asked me why I was angrier with you than I was with Dad.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“You have a therapist?”
“Don’t make this weird.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it.”
