PART 2 (Ending):
The room went silent.
Even the ticking clock above the refrigerator seemed to stop.
I slowly stood.
“What questions?”
The older officer removed a folder from beneath his arm.
“We received an anonymous report claiming you threatened your wife shortly after returning home. It also states you illegally accessed financial records and tampered with evidence.”
Vanessa lowered her head just enough to hide the smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
There it was.
Her backup plan.
If she couldn’t steal my mother’s life, she’d destroy mine instead.
I kept my voice steady.
“I’ll cooperate.”
The younger officer nodded.
“Good.”
Before anyone moved, Dr. Keller spoke.
“Officers, before you continue, you should hear this.”
He pointed toward the digital recorder beneath the kitchen table.
“I’ve been documenting this entire evaluation.”
I reached underneath the table and placed the recorder on the counter.
“Everything since this morning is here.”
The officer pressed play.
Vanessa’s own voice echoed through the kitchen.
“Once the doctor signs off, Ethan won’t question anything…”
Then came another recording.
One I hadn’t expected.
Weeks older.
Apparently the recorder had automatically synced to cloud storage after every session.
Vanessa’s voice again.
Only this time she wasn’t speaking to me.
She was speaking to someone on the phone.
“The old woman still refuses to sign.”
