I boarded my husband’s private jet and his secretary was in my seat, feeding him peeled orange. His mother told me to be considerate. I stepped off. Then the crew asked whether I wanted the flight cancelled.

And I had sat in a terminal, with a bag, telling a woman in a uniform to let the flight go — eleven hours before the thing that the whole arrangement hung on.

Nobody needed me on that aircraft.

They needed me not in that room, the following morning, at nine o’clock.

The seat was never about humiliation. The humiliation was the delivery mechanism, and it was chosen because it is the one thing that has always worked on me: give me a situation where staying is undignified, and I will remove myself, every single time, politely, and feel quite good about it afterwards.

Four years of evidence. They were not guessing.

PART 5

And here is the part I did not see coming, and which took Daxon two days and a woman in scheduling to confirm.

His mother did not back him up.

That sentence took me two days to be able to hold, and it reverses the entire morning.

She chose the seating.

She is the one who told that young woman to sit in that seat, by message, at seven minutes past six that morning — two hours and eleven minutes before I boarded.

The message is nine words long and it does not contain anything you could call an instruction. It is a suggestion about airsickness.

He did not know. Aurelio did not know.

He was simply the one who had to produce a sentence when his wife walked into a cabin and found somebody in her seat.

And he produced the one that came easiest to him, inside about two seconds, with no thought in it at all.

That is its own verdict on that man and it is not a defence of him. A person who has to be in on something to do damage is one kind of problem. A person who will produce remember your place under no pressure whatsoever, as a reflex, is a different kind and it is worse.

And she did it because she signed a personal guarantee on a loan in 2021.

Eleven million, against the house, at a point in 2021 where I was deliberately not told anything about anything.

She signed it in an office on her own. No lawyer of her own, at sixty-five, for her son.

I have thought about that a great deal and it has not made me like her and it has made the whole thing considerably sadder.
