Then something in her face cracked open.
She burst out laughing, a real laugh, the kind that made her grab her side and wince and keep laughing anyway.
“Well, I’ll be. Gordie? Gordie Ashby? Somebody pinch me!”
I took two steps forward and found I had to sit down. I lowered myself into the vinyl chair beside her bed before my knees made the decision for me.
“It’s me,” I said. “It’s really me.”
“You got old,” she said, wiping her eyes.
“So did you.”
“I got old and bald. You at least kept some of your hair.” She reached out a thin hand, and I took it without thinking. Her fingers were cold, but her grip was strong. “A preacher. Gordie Ashby, a preacher. You used to fall asleep in church.”
“I still do sometimes. Just at other people’s churches.”
She laughed again, and I laughed with her, and for a moment I was seventeen and the whole world was in front of us.
