great-recipes.grastyup.com “My uncle once asked me, ‘Are you a virgin?’ when I was already 27 years old. From that moment, I started to be afraid of him. And a few days later, when he took me to a hotel outside the city, he leaned close to my ear by the pool and whispered, ‘After the pool, come up to my room…’”

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?”

“Because he discovered that someone in the family had been helping your grandfather all along.”

I stared at Richard.

“Who?”

He didn’t speak.

Instead, he turned the photograph over in his hands and showed me a second picture tucked behind it.

This one was newer.

It showed my father standing beside Richard outside a hospital. On the back was a date from only a few months before my father died.

Below the date, my father had written a sentence.

If I cannot finish this, Richard must tell Emily everything.

My eyes filled with tears.

“Then why have you waited so long?”

Richard looked as though he had aged ten years in a single moment.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you. And because I didn’t know whether I could trust my own memories.”

He opened another folded page.

“This was found among your father’s belongings. I’ve spent months trying to verify it. I brought you here because I didn’t want anyone in the family overhearing us.”
