An elderly woman opened the door.
Her dark hair had turned almost completely silver, and deep lines crossed her face. But when she looked at me, I saw my own eyes looking back.
Neither of us moved.
Then she whispered, “You have your father’s smile.”
I began to cry.
She reached for me cautiously, as if afraid I might disappear if she moved too quickly.
I stepped forward and embraced her.
For a long time, we stood in the doorway, holding one another and crying for all the years we had lost.
Eventually, Anna led me inside and placed a small metal box on the table.
“Your father sent this to me shortly before he died,” she said. “I was too frightened to open it until I knew you were safe.”
Inside were bank records, old letters, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.
My father’s handwriting was unmistakable.
I opened it.
