“Who told you I was dead?” I asked.
Anna’s answer came in a whisper.
“Your grandfather. And the person who helped him…”
She paused.
“Was my own brother.”
I turned toward Richard.
He shook his head immediately.
“No. Emily, listen to me. I was young, and I believed what my father told us. I didn’t know you were Anna’s daughter until years later. When I found out, your father begged me to keep you safe.”
Anna was still on the phone.
“Emily, you need to be careful. There is one more thing your father discovered before he died.”
“What?”
“He found proof that his death wasn’t an accident.”
The room went completely silent.
I gripped the phone.
“What are you saying?”
“I don’t know who did it,” Anna said. “But Daniel had been preparing to expose the truth about your grandfather’s estate. A few days before he died, he called me and said he finally understood why I had disappeared.”
