Her eyes filled with tears.
I continued before I lost my courage.
“I wanted to sit with you. I wanted to hear about your life. I wanted to laugh with you. I wanted to walk beside you on the beach and feel like your mother, not someone you had brought along to make everything easier.”
Claire covered her mouth with one hand.
“I never thought of it that way.”
“I know,” I replied. “But that is why we have to talk about it. Sometimes people can hurt us without realizing what they are doing. And sometimes we help them keep hurting us because we are afraid to speak.”
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then Claire whispered, “I am sorry, Mom.”
This time, I did not rush to comfort her.
I did not immediately tell her that everything was fine.
I let her apology sit between us.
I let her feel what it meant.
