For years, I was the mother who always said yes. I put everyone else first, even when I was exhausted and had nothing left to give. But after a painful family vacation in Brittany, my daughter finally realized what she had been doing to me. And at 62, I discovered something I should have learned decades earlier: loving your family should never mean losing yourself.

“Mom, that is a very reasonable request.”

“It is a very important request.”

We laughed together.

And for the first time, I felt that my daughter was not simply hearing my words.

She was beginning to understand the woman behind them.

When it was time to leave, we walked to the station together.

Claire carried her own bag.

I carried mine.

She did not automatically reach for my belongings, and I did not automatically offer to carry hers.

We were two adults traveling together.

It was such a small thing.

But sometimes, the smallest changes reveal the biggest differences.

On the train home, Claire fell asleep against the window.

I watched the countryside pass by and thought about Bernard.

I wondered what he would have said if he could have seen me now.

He had always encouraged me to enjoy the little things.

He used to tell me that I spent so much time making everyone else’s lives comfortable that I sometimes forgot to live my own.
