Then, that afternoon, I found the other thing.

He had been keeping a running total since 2023. The figure at the bottom of the page was not as high as mine because he had stopped updating it in the November, but it was there.

I did not confront him about it that afternoon. I put it back exactly as it was and went and had a shower and got ready.
PART 4 — WHAT THE CHECKS SHOWED
Nineteen folders went down that table and the noise stopped in about four seconds.

Then everybody understood at the same time.

And then the thing I did not plan for started happening.
Three people at that table could not pay.

My brother-in-law Aldous had a card decline twice and went out to the car park. His wife paid on a card I later found out is at its limit.
A nephew and his girlfriend put together about sixty dollars in cash and were forty short.
And Briar sat in front of a check for
two hundred and eleven dollars and did not open the folder at all.
She has not worked since the March of 2022.
