“It isn’t ridiculous to feel insecure.”
“But what I did to Sophie was.”
“Yes.”
She didn’t argue.
“I convinced myself that if the wedding looked perfect, I’d finally have pictures I could enjoy. Then I started worrying about everything that might attract attention.”
“Including Sophie.”
“Yes.”
She began crying.
“I don’t know how I became someone who would do that.”
I thought about how fiercely Amanda had once defended my daughter.
“You made a cruel decision. But you can decide not to make another one.”
“Can I see her?”
“That depends on Sophie.”
“I want to apologize.”
“Then you need to tell her the truth. And you can’t expect forgiveness just because you’re sorry.”
Amanda agreed.
I also told her I regretted turning her ceremony into a public confrontation.
She was quiet before answering.
“I wish you’d handled it differently.”
“So do I. But I don’t regret defending Sophie.”
“I know.”
