At Thirty-Seven Weeks Pregnant, I Heard My Husband Tell My Doctor, “By Tomorrow Night, She’ll Be Gone”—He Had No Idea My Watch Was Recording Everything-0198t

The man who had sat beside my hospital bed six hours earlier and promised me that both my baby and I were perfectly safe.

I kept my breathing slow.

Through barely opened eyes, I watched the two men disappear into the small family lounge attached to my private suite.

They didn’t shut the connecting door completely.

That was their first mistake.

Their second mistake was assuming pregnancy had made me careless.

Evan’s voice dropped.

“Tomorrow morning. Once labor gets complicated, you do what we discussed.”

There was a pause.

Then Dr. Bell said, “Six hundred thousand is a lot of money.”

My entire body went cold.

Evan answered without hesitation.

“You get two hundred tomorrow. The rest once everything is certified and there are no questions.”

My fingers tightened beneath the blanket.

Dr. Bell spoke again.

“And if there are questions?”

“There won’t be.”

“Evan—”

“You’ve already told everyone she’s high risk. Blood pressure. Pregnancy complications. Emergency delivery. People die in hospitals every day.”

My heart slammed so violently against my ribs that I was terrified the fetal monitor would expose me.

For one horrible second, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.

Then Evan said the sentence that made everything clear.

“When Brooke is gone, the Whitaker shares become mine through the marriage. Tessa and I can finally stop living like criminals.”

Tessa.

I knew exactly who he meant.

Tessa Rowe.

Thirty-two years old.

Beautiful.

Polished.

The director of investor relations at my family’s company.

The woman who had hugged me at my baby shower and given me a handmade blanket.

The woman who routinely called me “the sister I never had.”

My stomach twisted.

Dr. Bell sounded irritated.

“You told me this was about financial pressure.”

“It is.”

“You never said anything about another woman.”

“That doesn’t concern you.”

Then Evan laughed quietly.

“She’s pregnant too.”

Every nerve in my body seemed to stop functioning.

Pregnant.

Tessa was pregnant.

Evan continued.

“Four months. I’m done sneaking around. I’m done spending weekends inventing conferences so I can see my own child.”

My own child.

I stared into the darkness.

My husband had another baby coming.

And apparently the easiest solution was to erase the wife standing between him and the life he wanted.

I felt our daughter shift inside my stomach.

That tiny movement saved me.

Because until then, I had been seconds away from sitting up and screaming.
