At Nineteen, My Mother Gave My Room to My Pregnant Twin and Told Me to Leave—Thirteen Years Later, They Pulled Up to My Estate With a Moving Truck and Said, “We’re Family. Open the Gate.”

“No.”

“You have.”

“No, Lauren. I spent most of my life making excuses for you.”

“You think you’re better than us because you have money.”

“This isn’t about money.”

Derek yelled toward the camera:

“Then open the gate!”

I turned toward the monitor.

He was standing directly beside the keypad again.

I activated the intercom.

“Step away from the entrance.”

He pressed a button.

Nothing happened.

“Emma, quit acting ridiculous.”

“Derek.”

“What?”

“Do not touch my gate again.”

He laughed.

“What are you gonna do, call the cops on your own family?”

“No.”

I glanced toward the separate security building beside the equipment lot.

“I’m calling the company that protects several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of equipment stored thirty yards behind you.”

Less than two minutes later, one of our contracted security vehicles came around the side road.

Then another.

Two guards approached the entrance.

Nobody shouted.
