“I heard him.”
“He could help you.”
“I’m not hiring him.”
“You don’t even know what he can do.”
“I know he showed up at my property with his furniture before receiving permission.”
Then Mom took the phone again.
“Emma, stop making this personal.”
“It became personal when you parked a moving truck in front of my home.”
“Your sister is in crisis.”
“No. Her lease ended.”
“The landlord sold the house!”
“You had notice.”
Lauren yelled:
“Thirty days!”
Derek corrected her.
“Almost two months.”
Another silence.
Interesting.
Mom changed direction.
“Even if they made mistakes, where is your compassion?”
“I can have compassion without giving away access to my house.”
“You know what it is like to be without a home.”
That stopped me.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked:
“You remember that?”
Mom’s tone changed.
“Of course I remember.”
“You remember me living in my car?”
