My hands began trembling as I read the first line of the letter.
“Margaret, if you’re reading this, then the day I’ve feared has finally arrived. There’s something I’ve hidden from you throughout our entire marriage.”
He went on to explain that many years ago, he had participated in a medical research program without ever telling me.
The program involved fertility research.
But the most frightening part was at the end of the letter.
“If you ever notice unexplained changes in your body, contact Dr. Adams. He knows everything.”
There was a telephone number at the bottom.
I called it.
The man who answered fell silent when he heard my name.
Then he asked:
“Are you Robert’s wife?”
“Yes.”
“Mrs. Margaret… I’ve been expecting your call.”
The following day, he came to my house.
He was a man of about seventy.
The moment he saw my enormous belly, he dropped into a chair.
