The doctors fought to save his life for several days.
Then they told me his condition had suddenly deteriorated.
I remembered my last visit. Thomas had smiled weakly, taken
my hand, and said:
“Maggie, promise me you won’t forget about yourself after I’m gone.”
I had burst into tears.
“Don’t talk like that. You’re coming home.”
But he never came home.
From that day forward, I had stopped living my own life.
And now, standing before me was a stranger who claimed to have known my husband.
“Did you work at the hospital?” I asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I was a patient too. We were being treated in the same department.”
The police officers explained that Sarah
had called to report a possible scam. She had asked them to make sure I was safe and that nobody was threatening me.
It turned out that Daniel wasn’t wanted by the police and had no accusations against him.
