Arthur calmly placed a second document on the table.
“Not this one.”
The deputy leaned closer.
“What is it?”
“A forensic verification report.”
Arthur looked directly at Celeste.
“The recording was automatically uploaded to Maya’s private cloud account before her phone was damaged. It contains the original device signature, creation time, location data, and an unaltered audio hash.”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“You planned this.”
I almost laughed.
“No,” I said.
I pointed at Maya.
“She survived it.”
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“Celeste didn’t mean to push her,” he said.
Celeste stared at him.
“Marcus.”
“She was angry,” he continued. “She didn’t think Maya would fall that far.”
I watched my son-in-law finally discover what fear felt like.
The deputy’s expression changed.
“You’re saying you witnessed the incident?”
Marcus swallowed.
“I was there.”
Celeste turned toward him.
“Don’t you dare.”
“You told me she was leaving,” Marcus said. “You said you would scare her into signing the agreement.”
“Marcus.”
“You told me the baby couldn’t be allowed to become a beneficiary.”
Eleanor suddenly spoke from the doorway.
“Enough.”
Her voice was quiet.
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped inside and closed the umbrella.
For the first time, the polished mask had disappeared from her face.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” she said to Arthur.
Arthur didn’t blink.
“I understand exactly what I’m doing.”
Eleanor looked at the folder.
“You know what that trust contains.”
“Yes.”
“You know what happens if the board learns about this.”
“Yes.”
Her voice dropped.
“Then you know the family could lose control.”
Arthur nodded.
“That is no longer my concern.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“You’re our legal protector.”
“No,” Arthur corrected her.
“I am the trust’s independent protector.”
He tapped the folder.
“My duty is to the beneficiaries, not the family name.”
The deputy picked up the statement Celeste had brought.
“Who prepared this?”
Nobody answered.
He looked at Marcus.
“Was this statement prepared before Maya arrived here?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Celeste snapped toward him.
“Marcus!”
“I can’t do this anymore.”
Her expression became murderous.
“You owe this family everything.”
Marcus looked at Maya.
“No. I owe her the truth.”
Maya was sitting at my kitchen table, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.
She looked exhausted.
