At 35, I married my wealthy 72-year-old boss so my daughter and I wouldn’t end up homeless. After he died, his lawyer looked at me and said, “He prepared this trap specifically for you… and he knew you would fall into it.”

But Richard had understood something about me.

I would never accept charity.

So when he heard my landlord threatening to evict me, he didn’t simply offer to pay my rent.

He knew that would destroy my pride.

Instead, he offered me a job.

Then friendship.

Then a family.

And eventually, love.

The lawyer continued.

“Richard also knew that if he simply left you his estate, you would become a target for people who would say you married him for money.”

I lowered my head.

He continued.

“So the estate isn’t yours.”

I looked up.

“Then where is it going?”

“The house is being transferred to the children’s foundation Richard created.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“It will become a residence and educational center for children who have grown up in foster care.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Then the lawyer placed another document in front of me.
