For a few seconds, I stood outside Sophie’s door with my hand on the handle, unable to move.

Then I opened it.

Thomas was sitting beside her bed.

Sophie was awake, completely still beneath the blanket, staring at him with the same frightened expression I had seen in the doctor’s office. The moment she noticed me in the doorway, her entire face changed.

“Mom.”

Thomas turned around quickly.

“What are you doing awake?”

I didn’t answer his question.

“What are you doing in here?”

He smiled, but it wasn’t the warm smile I had trusted for years.

“She couldn’t sleep. I came to check on her.”
