A Woman’s Husband Finally Agreed to Drive Their Daughter to Figure Skating Practice – But Then the Coach Called and Asked, ‘Why Hasn’t Your Daughter Been Showing up to Practice?’

“Did you know Dad hadn’t told me?”

She nodded.

Her eyes went straight to Dawson, as though he could explain why I was standing there. I realized she’d been carrying the secret with him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Dad said you’d worry and make us stop.”

I wanted to ask more, but her hands were shaking around the straps of her skate bag.

“That’s not what I said,” Dawson protested.

“You said Mom always chooses what’s safe.”

I wanted to ask more, but her hands were shaking around the straps of her skate bag. She was frightened enough without us arguing over her head.

She looked from him to me. “Can we go home?”

I took her bag. “Yes.”

“You lied to her coach, kept me in the dark, and spent money we needed.”

In the parking lot, Dawson followed us.

“You’re making an opportunity into something ugly, Karla.”
