A Woman’s Granddaughter Was Drawing Their Family Tree When She Noticed a Woman She Didn’t Recognize – Then the Girl Said, ‘Mom Asked Me Not to Tell You About Her’

This wasn’t one accidental meeting.

Laura, barely out of her teens, followed my lead.

Over the years, I sometimes wondered whether I had left Vanessa any road back at all.

Now Dori was happily coloring an aunt she liked, oblivious to the threat that woman posed.

Maybe Vanessa had found that road without me.

Then headlights swept across the kitchen wall. A car door shut. Two sets of footsteps came up the walk.

a betrayal so vile that I’d cut her off completely.

I smoothed my apron and told myself to breathe. I was going to ask Laura exactly what had been going on.

The front door opened, and Laura walked in.

Vanessa walked in behind her.

So much for secrets.

This one was ending tonight, with or without a family tree.

So much for secrets.

Laura went pale, the way she did as a kid when she’d broken something.
