A Woman’s Granddaughter Was Drawing Their Family Tree When She Noticed a Woman She Didn’t Recognize – Then the Girl Said, ‘Mom Asked Me Not to Tell You About Her’

“Stop. Listen carefully, because I’m only saying this once.”

I laid one hand flat on the check.

“So what changed?”

“Laura’s debt will be paid. Tonight. But that check buys you exactly one thing, and that’s your money. It buys no time with Dori. It buys no invitations. It buys no holidays. It buys no seat at my table. And it buys you no say in when Laura sees you, or whether she does.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“And you do not get to use a favor,” I said, “as proof that anyone owes you love.”

Vanessa took the check at last. She accused me of never wanting her back, but I didn’t argue. I opened the front door. She left angry.

“It buys no seat at my table.”

Laura stared at the table. “I’m sorry I hid it from you.”

“I’m hurt that you did,” I said. “But I understand why you thought you had to.”
