A Woman’s Granddaughter Was Drawing Their Family Tree When She Noticed a Woman She Didn’t Recognize – Then the Girl Said, ‘Mom Asked Me Not to Tell You About Her’

“I don’t think that’s asking very much.”

That scared me more than anything Vanessa had said.

Because I know my daughter. Laura wasn’t protecting her sister. She was afraid of making her angry.

“Laura. What is really going on?”

“Nothing’s going on,” Vanessa said.

“I didn’t ask you.” I kept my eyes on my younger girl. “I asked her.”

Laura wasn’t protecting her.

The kitchen clock ticked. Down the hall, I could hear Dori humming to herself.

Then Laura said, “I lied. She hasn’t changed, Mom.”

Vanessa sat back like she’d been slapped.

“That is not fair!”

“After the loan,” Laura said, her voice shaking, “little requests started. More visits with Dori. Invitations. Family dinners. And she kept pushing me to tell you.”

“I lied.”

“I wasn’t pushing,” Vanessa snapped. “I wanted my family back. Is that a crime?”

“Every time I said no, she reminded me who helped when I was desperate.”
