A message appeared.
Clara: “Thank you for today. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
I noticed several transfers.
Nathan noticed me looking and quickly slipped the phone into his pocket.
I said nothing.
But the next morning, I found something that made those photographs look almost innocent.
The next morning, I opened our joint bank account to pay the bills.
That’s when I noticed several transfers I didn’t recognize.
Nearly $6,000.
All of them had been made over the past two months.
And every single one was addressed to Clara.
I grabbed a calculator and added up the amounts.
Nearly $6,000.
I stared at the screen.
But why keep it from me?
Just last week, Nathan had suggested postponing our plans to replace the living room furniture.
“We should be careful with money for a while,” he’d said.
Apparently, that only applied to me.
I tried to be reasonable. Maybe Clara was struggling financially. Maybe Nathan was helping her because she was the children’s mother.
