“Look, Mommy!” she announced, holding up her masterpiece.
I smiled and leaned closer.
She’d drawn a beautiful building with enormous windows. Inside stood a grand piano, surrounded by four stick figures.
“That’s lovely, sweetheart. Who are all these people?”
My smile faltered.
Maisie pointed proudly.
“That’s Daddy, that’s Owen, that’s me, and that’s Mommy Clara!”
My smile faltered.
I had never objected to the children spending time with their biological mother. I knew Clara would always be part of their lives.
But Nathan hadn’t mentioned any recent visits.
“And guess what?”
“Have you been spending time with Mommy Clara?”
Maisie nodded enthusiastically.
“Daddy takes us there sometimes! And guess what? I can almost do it all by myself now!”
“Do what, sweetheart?”
Before she could answer, Owen walked into the kitchen.
Owen shifted uncomfortably.
“Maisie! Remember what Dad said!”
Maisie’s eyes widened. She immediately covered her mouth with both hands.
