Nobody spoke.
Something fell in Marcus’s kitchen. We all turned to glance at the door.
Marcus’s pushed back his chair.
“Time for my surprise.”
Something fell
He rose and opened the kitchen door.
“Dan, there’s someone who’d like to talk to you.”
Laura stepped out in her green sweater, one hand resting on her belly.
I rose so fast my chair caught the rug.
“Time for my surprise.”
“You heard everything?”
She nodded.
“An ambush!” Mom stood. “You planned this.”
“I invited Laura to talk with Dan afterward,” Marcus said. “She agreed. She got here early and waited with Hannah. Dan didn’t know.”
“Ambush!”
“Then she can apologize for the video before we discuss anything else.”
“No.” I looked at Laura. “You don’t owe my mother an apology for showing what happened.”
Her eyes filled.
“And I… I can’t make her apologize,” I said. “But I can apologize for myself. You asked me for help, and I made you feel unreasonable for needing it. I’m sorry.”
