“How?”
My voice broke.
“Because he was my little boy.”
Beau thought about that for a moment.
Then his face brightened.
“So you’re my grandma?”
I couldn’t speak at first.
I simply nodded.
He leaned forward and hugged me.
It was clumsy and immediate.
One small
arm wrapped around my neck while the other still held a cracker.
I closed my eyes.
For three years, I had believed the accident had taken every future version of Caleb away from me.
His wedding.
His children.
Watching him grow older.
I thought all of those moments had disappeared forever.
I had been wrong.
Not completely.
That evening, Sadie and I talked until the light outside began to fade.
Nothing was magically fixed in one afternoon.
There was anger to work through.
There were questions she couldn’t answer.
There were years we could never get back.
But before I left, she gave me her number.
