The following morning, I called Eric.
He answered immediately.
“Me too.”
“Are you coming home today?”
“No. I’m staying with Sandra for a while. I need time to decide what happens next.”
“Amy, I’ve apologized. What else can I do?”
“You can think about how you’ve treated me because this didn’t start at the rest stop.”
“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing,” he admitted. “After Sandra told everyone, they’re asking why I left you there.”

“I’m staying with Sandra.”
“What am I supposed to say?”
“Tell them you wanted to punish me for making you wait a few minutes.”

“I’m done protecting you from embarrassment while you make me feel ashamed of myself.”
“I knew you took the blame for Ariana’s birthday dinner,” he admitted.
