Ariana watched him.
He turned toward me.
“I’m sorry, Amy. I shouldn’t have left you there.”
“Thank you for apologizing.”
He looked relieved.
“Good. Can we put this behind us?”
“I’m sorry, Amy.”

“What else do you want me to say?”
“I want you to understand why I’m not coming home with you.”
The room went quiet.
Eric stared at me.
“Not yet.”
“You’re staying here?”
“Yes. I need time to think.”
“You’re seriously putting our marriage at risk over nine minutes?”
“No, Eric. You left me there because of nine minutes. I’m making this decision because of everything that came before them.”

Neither did Ariana.
I continued.
“I’ve spent years apologizing for things you did. I’ve defended you when you embarrassed me and explained away the way you speak to me.”
