A 101-year-old man was taken to court for stealing over $2,000 worth of items

ITEM 8. THE CHARGE SHEET.

Two thousand and forty dollars.

I got a look at the itemised list afterwards, because Bertie’s solicitor let me, and I made a copy.

Four months. About thirty visits.

The biggest single item on it is nine dollars forty.

There is not one thing on that whole list that any person would steal. It is soup and bread and batteries and cat food, thirty times over, which is exactly what is on those four pieces of paper.

Rossiter’s had the receipts for January and February in their own system. They had four years of a man coming in twice a week and paying.

Nobody looked.

The girls on the tills noticed. Three of them, by the summer, had started saying something to each other about it.

None of them had the authority to do anything but report it, so they reported it, which is what they are told to do.
